The River Looks Back
Echoes at the Estuary takes the visual memory of the Yangtze River before it reaches the sea as its point of departure. Using photographs collected along the river, light-based elements, and spatial objects, the work forms a visual experiment on the sedimentation of time. Through the juxtaposition, overlap, and blurred emergence of multiple images, riverbanks, figures, industrial landscapes, and fragments of daily life are no longer treated as isolated records, but as re-encoded pieces of memory. As viewers encounter the archive-like image matrix, they also sense the interweaving of water, light, and old shadows. In the river’s final glance before entering the sea, collective memory returns, overlaps, and slowly appears again.
INTERACTION
Presence Awakens the River
Through computer vision, the work translates the viewer’s approach, pause, and act of looking into a mechanism that activates light. When viewers enter the area in front of the installation, the system recognizes their bodily presence and alters the relationship between folded images and illumination. As the sound of a ship horn emerges, photographs collected along the Yangtze River are lit again between brightness and darkness, awakening waves, historical traces, and individual gazes at the same moment. Viewers do not need to perform complex actions; by simply approaching, looking, or staying, they take part in the process of memory becoming visible. Interaction is therefore not only a technical response, but a relation of seeing: when we look at the same river, we may also begin to see one another.

SYSTEM
Technology Recedes, Memory Emerges
The focus of Echoes at the Estuary is not to foreground computer vision or light control, but to use technology to bring river memory, long covered by time, back into view. Photographs, light, the sound of a ship horn, and net-like spatial structures form a quiet polyphony. They refer both to real sites along the Yangtze River and to the shared yet often unspoken emotions carried by river experience. Technology remains behind the act of viewing, allowing light to move between images like the tide and memory to shift continuously between clarity and blur. Between personal experience and collective memory, real images and sensory echoes, the work turns the space into a poetic site of river, time, and encounter.
